The short verdict
Best for most small UK stores: Tidio. It has a free plan, installs in minutes, and its Lyro AI agent can answer common questions from your own FAQs and policies. Best free option: Shopify Inbox, Shopify's own free chat app with an AI sales associate. Best for growing stores with a support team: Gorgias, a full helpdesk with an AI agent that works with your order data.
If you run a small Shopify store, the same handful of questions probably fill your inbox: Where's my order? Do you ship to Ireland? What's your returns policy? Will this fit? An AI chatbot can answer many of these instantly, at 11pm on a Sunday, while you get on with running the business. The catch is that a badly set-up bot frustrates customers and costs sales.
This guide looks at three realistic options for a small UK store and the UK-specific things to get right. App ratings and plan details were checked on the official Shopify App Store listings and vendor pricing pages in October 2026. Vendor pricing is in US dollars, so the sterling amount you pay will move with exchange rates, and VAT may be added.

1. Tidio: best for most small UK stores
Tidio combines a live-chat widget, a shared inbox and Lyro, its AI agent. You give Lyro your FAQs, shipping and returns pages and other support content, and it writes answers to customer questions in natural language, passing the chat to you when it gets stuck. Tidio's Flows let you add rule-based automations too, such as a welcome discount or an order-number prompt.
Why it suits small UK stores: there's a free plan, a 7-day trial of all features with no credit card, and paid plans aimed at small businesses. On customer-service plans you are billed for conversations that a human replies to, not for spam or messages answered entirely by automation. Every account starts with 50 Lyro conversations, so you can test the AI on real customers before paying for a Lyro plan. Tidio's App Store listing also mentions native Shopify actions on its Lyro plan.
Watch out for: costs growing with conversation volume, and the free plan's limit of 100 unique visitors a month for Flows. Read our Tidio review for the full breakdown, or our head-to-head Tidio vs Gorgias comparison.
2. Shopify Inbox: best free option
Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own chat app and, as of October 2026, it is free on the Shopify App Store. Shopify describes it as an AI sales associate for your storefront that learns from your catalogue, policies and store content, lets you control its tone and rules, and can be run with or without the AI agent. It includes built-in analytics such as orders assisted.
Why it suits very small stores: it is native to Shopify, costs nothing, and you manage chats in the same place as your orders. For a store getting a few chats a week, it may be all you need. The limitation is breadth: it is focused on storefront chat, so if you also want email ticketing, social inboxes or a richer automation builder, you'll outgrow it.
3. Gorgias: best for stores with a support team
Gorgias is an e-commerce helpdesk rather than a chat widget. It brings email, chat, social, SMS and voice into one inbox, shows each customer's Shopify orders next to the ticket, and lets agents refund, cancel or edit orders without switching tabs. Its AI Agent aims to fully resolve common requests such as order tracking and returns.
Why it's not our top pick for small stores: there's no free plan, the entry tier includes a small ticket allowance, and costs follow ticket volume and AI usage closely. Once you have hundreds of tickets a month and someone whose job is customer service, though, it is the most capable option here. Gorgias also says it hosts customer data in the US, EU or Australia by region, which may help with your data-protection planning. Read our Gorgias review.
UK-specific things to get right
Train the bot on UK policies, in British English
An AI agent only knows what you give it. Make sure your shipping page states UK delivery times and costs, whether you ship to Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the EU, and who pays any import charges for international orders. Write in British English so the bot echoes it: "colour", "postcode", "£". Then test it with the questions your customers actually ask.
Get returns answers right
Under the UK's Consumer Contracts Regulations, customers buying online generally have a 14-day cancellation period for goods, starting the day after delivery, with some exceptions such as personalised items. Your chatbot must not contradict your legal obligations, for example by telling a customer they can't return an item they're entitled to cancel. Keep your returns policy accurate, link to it in the bot's training content, and have a human review any disputed cases. If you are unsure of your obligations, check the official guidance on GOV.UK or take advice.
Privacy and cookies
Chat widgets process personal data such as names, emails and order details, and some set cookies or similar technologies. Under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) you should mention your chat provider in your privacy notice and check whether its cookies need consent through your cookie banner. Each vendor publishes its own privacy and data-processing terms; read them before installing.
Opening hours and handover
Set the bot's "talk to a human" option to reflect your real UK hours, and tell customers when they'll hear back. An honest "we'll reply by 10am tomorrow" beats a bot that loops.
Let Shopify's AI help you write the training content
Whichever chatbot you choose, its answers depend on your FAQs and policies. Shopify's built-in AI assistant, now presented as Sidekick and covered in our Shopify Magic review, is included with Shopify plans and can help draft clearer product descriptions and store content. Always review what it writes before publishing, especially anything about refunds or delivery promises.
How to choose in five minutes
- Count last month's customer messages across email, chat and social.
- Fewer than a few a week? Start with Shopify Inbox.
- Dozens a week, mostly simple questions? Choose Tidio and switch on Lyro once your FAQs are solid.
- Hundreds a month and someone dedicated to support? Trial Gorgias.
- Whatever you choose, review the bot's conversations weekly for the first month and fix the answers it gets wrong.
Bottom line
For most small UK Shopify stores, Tidio hits the best balance of price, simplicity and useful AI. Shopify Inbox is a sensible free first step, and Gorgias is the upgrade path when support becomes a team job.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free chatbot for Shopify?
Shopify Inbox is free on the Shopify App Store (as of Oct 2026) and includes an AI sales associate. Tidio also has a free plan, with 50 Lyro AI conversations to start.
Do I need cookie consent for a chat widget in the UK?
It depends on which cookies or similar technologies the widget uses. Under PECR, non-essential cookies generally need consent. Check your chat provider's documentation and configure your cookie banner accordingly.

It can answer returns questions and, with some tools, start a return. Make sure its answers match your legal obligations under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and route disputes to a human.
