The short verdict
Yes, ClickUp is free, and its Free Forever plan is one of the most generous free project-management plans for small teams: unlimited tasks, unlimited members, docs, Kanban boards and sprints. The limits that usually push teams to upgrade are 60MB of file storage, 5 Spaces, 100 automation actions a month and advanced views such as Gantt and Timeline that are available only as limited trials.
ClickUp is a project and task management tool with docs, chat, whiteboards and AI built in. For a small team, the question is usually simple: can we run our work on the free plan, and if not, what will we hit first? This guide answers that from ClickUp's official pricing page, checked in October 2026 (prices checked October 2026). If you're choosing between ClickUp and a docs-first tool, see our ClickUp vs Notion comparison.

The free features that matter most to small teams
Unlimited members and tasks
This is the big one. Many project tools cap the number of users on a free plan. ClickUp's pricing page lists unlimited Free plan members and unlimited tasks, and says Free Forever Workspaces can have an unlimited number of members and guests at no charge. A five-person agency, a shop with a couple of part-timers, or a trades business with a few subcontractors can all work in one Workspace without paying.
One caveat: on the Free plan, guests have full create and edit permissions, and these can't be changed. If you want to invite clients but stop them editing everything, that's a paid-plan feature (paid plans add view-only guests and limited access).
Views, docs and sprints
List, Board (Kanban), Calendar and Table views are included, and so are collaborative Docs, Sprints, custom statuses, priorities, tags and dependencies. For most small teams, those cover day-to-day project management: who's doing what, by when, and what's blocked.
Automations
The Free plan allows 5 active automation rules and 100 automation actions per Workspace per month. That's enough for a few helpful rules, such as "when a task moves to Done, notify the client owner", but a busy team will use 100 actions quickly. For automations that connect ClickUp to other apps, the free plan includes the Zapier and Make integrations; see our Make free plan guide.
The limits you'll hit first
- 60MB of storage. ClickUp says tasks don't count against storage, only file attachments do. Teams that attach design files, contracts or photos will fill 60MB quickly. A common workaround is linking to files in a cloud drive instead of uploading them, but note that the Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and OneDrive integrations are listed for paid plans.
- 5 Spaces. Spaces are the top level of ClickUp's hierarchy. Five is enough if you organise by department (for example Sales, Delivery, Marketing, Admin), but not if you want one Space per client.
- Trial-only features. Gantt charts, Timeline, Workload, Custom Fields, time tracking, Dashboards and Goals are listed as "Trial" on Free. ClickUp explains that these "uses" are cumulative for the Workspace and don't reset. When you reach the limit you keep your data but can't create or edit more items with that feature.
- Chat history. Chat message history is 90 days on Free, and the Activity view shows one day.
- AI. ClickUp Brain is available to try. The comparison table lists 500 AI credits per Workspace on Free, with larger pooled allowances on paid plans.
ClickUp also says that if you hit a usage limit, you can keep using the product and it may offer a grace period while you choose a plan.
What does upgrading cost?
Paid ClickUp plans are charged per user per month, and ClickUp says upgrading applies to your whole Workspace, meaning every member, so a five-person team pays for five seats. Payment is per Workspace.
When we checked, ClickUp's pricing page was showing two different price tables. The main plan cards listed Core at $9 per user/month billed yearly (shown against a regular price of $12) and Business at $17 per user/month billed yearly (regular $25), plus Enterprise (custom) and a new Max tier. Further down, an older table still listed Unlimited at $7 per user/month billed yearly ($10 monthly) and Business at $12 ($19 monthly). Because the page is mid-change, confirm the price shown at checkout before you upgrade. Prices are in US dollars.
ClickUp offers a 100% refund if you ask within 30 days of a purchase and you're not satisfied. It also mentions discounts for nonprofits, students, educators and startups.
Is the free plan enough for your team?
Free Forever is probably enough if…
- you have a small team managing tasks, deadlines and a handful of projects;
- you keep files in a separate cloud drive and link to them;
- you can organise work into five Spaces;
- you only need a few simple automations.
Plan to upgrade if…
- you need Gantt charts or Timeline views for client projects beyond the trial uses;
- you want clients as guests with limited or view-only access;
- you'll attach lots of files;
- you need time tracking or dashboards for reporting.
How to get the most from ClickUp Free
- Design your Spaces first. With only five, use them for broad areas and use Folders and Lists for clients or projects.
- Use trial features deliberately. Because trial uses don't reset, save them for the work where you need them.
- Link, don't upload. Keep big files in your existing storage and paste links into tasks.
- Automate outside ClickUp if needed. If 100 automation actions isn't enough, a tool like Make can create or update tasks from your forms, inbox or shop.
ClickUp Free vs Notion Free
Notion is the main alternative small teams consider. Notion is stronger for docs and wikis; ClickUp is stronger for managing tasks against deadlines, and its free plan doesn't limit team size. Our ClickUp vs Notion guide compares the two in detail, and our Notion notes cover its plans.
Bottom line
ClickUp's Free Forever plan is free in a meaningful sense: unlimited tasks and members are rare at this price. Most small teams can run real projects on it, provided they keep files elsewhere and work within five Spaces. When you need Gantt charts, client guests with restricted access or more automations, upgrade the whole Workspace and check the live price first.
